Plain of Jars

Laos is home to one of the most remarkable megalithic sites in Asia: The Plain of Jars. Located in north central Laos outside the town of Phonsavon, the area is better referred to as an ancient megalithic area instead of one specific site since it covers a decent amount of territory. Reaching back thousands of years, the jars — between 1 and 3 meters in both height and diameter and carved from rock — are believed to have been used for burial practices. 

Their exact age is unconfirmed, though certainly they go back at least two thousand years. Some suggest that the site dates back yet further than that. There are more than 90 sites with many jars. So, in short, if you’re into cool ancient mysteries, this spot is for you. 

Phonsavon is located southeast of Luang Prabang, though the route to get there winds quite a bit, making it a significant full-day or two day trip to get there (depending on your riding speed and stamina) if you want to add this to your itinerary. 

War Memories: Long Tieng

Long Tieng (or Long Cheng, depending on the transliteration) was a primary airbase and large town during the Laotian Civil War and the American War in Vietnam. It hosted the (secret) CIA air base that was used to house aircraft that bombed within Laos which is, by the by, the most-bombed country per capita in history. To wit, more than 2 million tons of cluster bombs were dropped on the country, many of which still litter the landscape as some 30% never exploded. More on that later. 

This airbase and town, which never appeared on a map, was — during the war — the second-largest by population in Laos. Although it’s a tiny village these days, it still holds a major tourist attraction: that of General Vang Pao’s house. According to some sources, you’ll need official permission to enter it, though “official” can be a fuzzy term. Our tour guides will have the scoop.  

General Vang Pao fought alongside the Americans against the Communist Laotian movement, the Pathet Lao, who overran the town and base in 1975. Pao commanded the “Secret Army,” composed largely of Hmong, who fought both the North Vietnamese and the Pathet Lao. General Pao relocated to the United States, along with many Hmong who also fought along the US.

Laos has a large amount of uncleared landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) from the war nearly 50 years ago. This is quite a serious warning — we’re not kidding here. Some recent estimates report 80 million pieces of UXO remaining in the country. If a blissful, unmarked area of jungle looks tempting to go wandering off in, don’t do it. Many NGOs and the government itself have been working for decades to clear UXO and landmines, but there’s still much work to be done.
