Popular Motorbike Tour Routes in Laos
Laos boasts a diverse range of motorbike tour routes that cater to riders of all levels, from beginners to experienced adventurers. One of the most popular routes is the journey from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng, which takes riders through picturesque landscapes, including limestone karsts, emerald rice fields, and traditional Lao villages. This route offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural immersion, and it’s our current favorite due to the otherworldly, Jurassic Park-like environment as well as relatively quiet roads. The beautiful town of Luang Prabang and the laid-back river scene in Vang Vieng are popular tourist destinations for a good reason.
For those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path experience, exploring the Bolaven Plateau on a motorbike is a must. This southern region is known for its lush coffee plantations, thundering waterfalls, and diverse ethnic communities. Riding through the misty mountains and fertile valleys of the Bolaven Plateau provides a glimpse into the rural life of Laos, away from the tourist crowds.
Another iconic route is the famous Loop in Northern Laos, which encompasses the towns of Nong Khiaw, Muang Ngoi, and Phongsali. This route winds through rugged terrain, river valleys, and dense forests, offering riders a challenging yet rewarding adventure. The stunning vistas, serene rivers, and warm hospitality of the locals make the Loop a favorite among seasoned riders looking for an authentic Lao experience. We’ll cover both in more detail below.
Exploring the Bolaven Plateau on a Motorbike
The Bolaven Plateau, located in southern Laos, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered on two wheels. This fertile region is renowned for its coffee production, with verdant plantations stretching as far as the eye can see. Embarking on a motorbike tour of the Bolaven Plateau allows you to meander through lush landscapes, visit tribal villages, and witness the traditional way of life in rural Laos.
One of the highlights of exploring the Bolaven Plateau is the chance to visit majestic waterfalls, such as Tad Lo and Tad Fane, which cascade down steep cliffs into turquoise pools below. The cool mist from the cascades provides a refreshing break from the tropical heat, inviting you to relax and soak in the natural beauty surrounding you. Additionally, the plateau is dotted with charming guesthouses and eco-lodges where you can unwind after a day of riding.
As you navigate the winding roads of the Bolaven Plateau, you’ll encounter friendly locals going about their daily routines, children playing in the fields, and monks clad in saffron robes walking to temples. Essential Gear and Equipment for Motorbike Touring in Laos
Before embarking on a motorbike tour in Laos, it’s crucial to pack the right gear and equipment to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. Start with a high-quality helmet that fits securely and provides adequate protection in case of accidents. Gloves with good grip, sturdy footwear, and durable clothing that offers protection from the elements are also essential.
Carrying a basic tool kit, spare parts, and a first aid kit can help you handle minor repairs and medical emergencies on the road. A reliable GPS device or offline maps on your phone will come in handy for navigation, especially in remote areas where signage may be limited. It’s also advisable to pack essentials such as water, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent to stay hydrated and protected throughout your journey.
For longer tours, consider investing in saddlebags or a backpack to store your belongings securely. Waterproof gear and covers for your luggage can protect your belongings from unexpected rain showers or muddy roads. Lastly, having travel insurance that covers motorcycle touring and medical evacuation can provide peace of mind in case of unforeseen circumstances.
If you’re riding with us, we’ll have all of the above taken care of so you can simply enjoy the journey.
Plain of Jars
Laos is home to one of the most remarkable megalithic sites in Asia: The Plain of Jars. Located in north central Laos outside the town of Phonsavon, the area is better referred to as an ancient megalithic area instead of one specific site since it covers a decent amount of territory. Reaching back thousands of years, the jars — between 1 and 3 meters in both height and diameter and carved from rock — are believed to have been used for burial practices.
Their exact age is unconfirmed, though certainly they go back at least two thousand years. Some suggest that the site dates back yet further than that. There are more than 90 sites with many jars. So, in short, if you’re into cool ancient mysteries, this spot is for you.
Phonsavon is located southeast of Luang Prabang, though the route to get there winds quite a bit, making it a significant full-day or two day trip to get there (depending on your riding speed and stamina) if you want to add this to your itinerary.
War Memories: Long Tieng
Long Tieng (or Long Cheng, depending on the transliteration) was a primary airbase and large town during the Laotian Civil War and the American War in Vietnam. It hosted the (secret) CIA air base that was used to house aircraft that bombed within Laos which is, by the by, the most-bombed country per capita in history. To wit, more than 2 million tons of cluster bombs were dropped on the country, many of which still litter the landscape as some 30% never exploded. More on that later.
This airbase and town, which never appeared on a map, was — during the war — the second-largest by population in Laos. Although it’s a tiny village these days, it still holds a major tourist attraction: that of General Vang Pao’s house. According to some sources, you’ll need official permission to enter it, though “official” can be a fuzzy term. Our tour guides will have the scoop.
General Vang Pao fought alongside the Americans against the Communist Laotian movement, the Pathet Lao, who overran the town and base in 1975. Pao commanded the “Secret Army,” composed largely of Hmong, who fought both the North Vietnamese and the Pathet Lao. General Pao relocated to the United States, along with many Hmong who also fought along the US.
Safety Tips for Motorbike Touring in Laos
While motorbike touring in Laos is undeniably exhilarating, safety should always be a top priority to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride. Before setting off on your adventure, make sure to wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet, gloves, sturdy footwear, and protective clothing. Investing in high-quality gear can significantly reduce the risk of injuries in case of accidents.
It is also essential to familiarize yourself with the local traffic rules and road conditions in Laos. While the roads offer stunning views, some areas may have potholes, loose gravel, or unexpected obstacles. Maintaining a cautious and defensive riding style can help you navigate these challenges safely. Additionally, be mindful of weather conditions, especially during the rainy season when roads may become slippery. Buses also have a reputation for driving like maniacs, so always be on the lookout for buses overtaking on blind corners.
Another crucial aspect of staying safe while motorbike touring in Laos is to stay hydrated and well-rested. Long hours on the road can take a toll on your body, so make sure to take regular breaks, stretch, and refuel with plenty of water and snacks. Lastly, having travel insurance that covers motorbike accidents is advisable for added peace of mind.
Stay on the Beaten Path
Something that’s unfortunately a major safety concern in Laos is being sure to stay on marked roads and trails. Laos has a large amount of uncleared landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) from the war nearly 50 years ago. This is quite a serious warning — we’re not kidding here. Some recent estimates report 80 million pieces of UXO remaining in the country. If a blissful, unmarked area of jungle looks tempting to go wandering off in, don’t do it. Many NGOs and the government itself have been working for decades to clear UXO and landmines, but there’s still much work to be done.
Planning Your Motorbike Tour in Laos
Planning a motorbike tour in Laos requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Start by researching the best time to visit based on weather conditions, road accessibility, and local festivals. The dry season from November to March is generally recommended for motorbike touring, as roads are in better condition and temperatures are more comfortable.
Next, decide on the duration of your tour and the regions you wish to explore based on your riding experience and interests. Whether you prefer scenic routes, cultural immersion, or off-road adventures, Laos offers a diverse range of landscapes and experiences to suit every rider. We’ll offer a variety of trips in Laos to suit multiple schedules—more on that soon.
Create a detailed itinerary that includes daily destinations, estimated riding times, accommodation options, and points of interest along the way. Booking accommodations in advance, especially in remote areas, can help ensure a comfortable stay after a long day of riding. Stay flexible in your plans to allow for unexpected discoveries and spontaneous detours that add a sense of adventure to your tour.
Again, we’ll have the above taken care of should you choose to ride with us. We like to make ourselves regulars at our watering holes and hotels so you can expect the best welcome and treatment.
Lastly, familiarize yourself with local customs, greetings, and basic Lao phrases to communicate with locals and show respect for their culture. Be open to trying traditional Lao dishes, interacting with villagers, and participating in community activities to enrich your experience.
